Who we are

The World Microfinance Forum Geneva (WMFG) is a not-for-profit association founded in 2007, in the aftermath of two highly acclaimed events organised in Switzerland in the International Year of Microcredit. Membership is open to both private and public entities working or interested in inclusive financial services.

WMFG believes in the positive economic and social impact of inclusive financial markets. Financial markets are inclusive when they become accessible to those who were previously excluded. Investment in inclusive finance can be a profitable business opportunity as well as a powerful means to contributing to poverty reduction and sustainable development. At the WMFG, we aim to facilitate a continuous dialogue between regulators, investors and providers of inclusive financial services by way of Working Groups. In so doing, the WMFG acts as a catalyst for the promotion of inclusive financial markets.

Our Vision
Our vision is to be the leading global platform which promotes responsible investment in inclusive financial markets.

Our Mission
Our mission is to assist high-level stakeholders in their decisions regarding investment in inclusive finance.

Our Strengths
  • Based in Geneva Our location in the heart of Europe allows us to capitalize on Switzerland’s position as a leading financial and humanitarian centre. The WMFG contributes to the country’s transformation into a global hub for investment in microfinance and coordinates between existing Swiss sustainable finance platforms to maximize potential effect. The Swiss location also gives the WMFG access to three of the four leading Microfinance Investment Vehicle managers in the world: BlueOrchard, responsAbility and symbiotics. BlueOrchard is among the WMFG’s Members and responsAbility has sponsored recent research.
  • Investor-led Through our Members and Partners from mainstream financial institutions and specialized microfinance investment intermediaries, we have access to a significant group of investors, such as pension funds, insurance companies, asset managers and family offices. Investors play a leading role through a globally-oriented and diversified membership in Working Groups which promote discussion and progress on issues that require a multidisciplinary collaborative approach.
