The World Microfinance Forum Geneva (WMFG) has commissioned a survey among European pension funds on the rationale and prospects for their investment in microfinance. The objectives of the survey were to:
- Assess pension funds’ current investment in microfinance products
- Understand potential barriers and drivers of pension fund investment in microfinance
- Get insight into pension funds’ future demand for microfinance investments
- Evaluate sources of information used and needed by pension funds to take decisions about microfinance investments.

With the survey, WMFG wishes to raise awareness among pension funds and asset managers about the current and future supply of microfinance investment products, and increase their interest in considering microfinance as an opportunity to achieve both financial and social returns.
The report was launched during a lunch event for members, sponsors and survey participants on the 7th of September, kindly hosted by UBS in Carouge.
