Working Group on Islamic Microfinance

Welcome to the Working Group on Islamic Microfinance

Conventional microfinance products are widely available in many Muslim majority countries. However, market studies show that religious considerations prevent large numbers of people from using them. In addition, even users of conventional products often prefer products that are Sharia-compliant. The World Microfinance Forum Geneva (WMFG) intends to convene a 2-year Working Group to guide research into issues that will help to increase access to financial services in predominantly Muslim countries.

What activities will the Working Group carry out?

  • The development of a deeper base of market research on Islamic microfinance,
  • The documentation and analysis of a wide range of business models for Islamic microfinance,
  • The documentation and analysis of a wide range of Sharia-compliant microfinance products and services,
  • The development of global financial reporting standards and disclosure guidelines on Islamic microfinance,
  • The development of performance benchmarks for Islamic microfinance.
