Working Group on Opportunities at the Base of the Pyramid

Welcome to the Working Group on Opportunities at the Base of the Pyramid.

At present, global multinational corporations (MNCs) have become aware of the opportunities that lie at the base of the pyramid (BoP) but few have implemented strategies that match the success of the leaders of the field. The World Microfinance Forum Geneva (WMFG) will seek to advance this process through the creation of a two-year Working Group that will advise it on its research into key issues shaping this emerging trend. Guided by Michael Chu of Harvard Business School, the Working Group will examine a wide range of complex, interconnected issues.

Issues
  • What key factors have characterised the leading examples of commercial success at the BoP?
  • When should global MNCs engage in doing business at the BoP?
  • What is the interplay between corporate social responsability, public relations and business at the BoP?
  • What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of global MNCs vis-à-vis local entreprises at the BoP?
  • How will the formulation of strategy differ for global MNCs at the BoP?
