Inclusive Access to Financial Services in China:
Challenges and Opportunities


On the 27th of February 2008, the World Microfinance Forum Geneva (WMFG) hosted a workshop on inclusive finance in Beijing.

The workshop was organized in collaboration with the China Association of Mcirofinance (CAM), the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Participants
The workshop in Beijing brought together close to one hundred representatives of organizations involved in, or considering to get involved in the development of inclusive financial markets in China. They included the key microfinance providers, financial sector regulators, Chinese and international banks and insurance companies as well as investment funds.

Contents
During the workshop leading experts on inclusive finance in China provided an up-to-date overview of the demand for and supply of microfinance, the enabling environment, and patterns of cooperation. Presentations were followed by moderated discussions, with a focus on foreign investment in inclusive finance in China.

Research
The World Microfinance Forum commissioned four original research papers on inclusive finance in China, which the authors summarized in their presentations during the workshop. These papers represent the most recent authorative information available in English about the status and prospect of inclusive finance in China.

Output
The event shed light on the the rapidly evolving Chinese microfinance sector, and offered a platform for mutual learning. Participants went away with a better understanding of the remaining challenges, and with a clearer idea of the opportunities for investors to help make China’s financial sector truly inclusive. The proceedings, presentations and discussions of the workshop were summarized in an output paper.

Networking
The program offered extensive space for networking before, during and after the event. The World Microfinance Forum Geneva is proud to announce that the workshop planted the seeds for several concrete agreements for collaboration and investment which are expected to contribute towards the goal of inclusive financial markets in China.
