What we do and how

The World Microfinance Forum Geneva (WMFG)’s work rests on five operational pillars. It is:

  • Structured around working groups
  • Research-oriented
  • Technologically forward-looking
  • Collaborative
  • High profile

WMFG’s core business is the creation and management of working groups. A working group brings together leading stakeholders around a complex issue of mutual concern. It is a platform for constant networking and learning, as well as in-depth exchange of expertise.

A working group agenda typically focuses on the production of bespoke research crucial for the advancement of the debate on the group’s topic. WMFG provides strategic guidance in the setting of each group’s agenda, and ensures the quality and timeliness of the research.

Working groups are connected through the efficient use of technology. A dedicated intranet provides the group with exclusive access to various tools for virtual networking, a specialized library on the group’s topic and the most recent outputs from the group’s research.

Working groups meet physically twice a year, and for this WMFG collaborates with global microfinance conference organizers. It ensures that closed-door sessions among working group members are followed by public panel discussions on related topics in a host conference.

WMFG creates a high profile for the working group in the media through the organization of press conferences, statements and interviews around its meetings. This way the working group achieves its ultimate aim of influencing decision-makers on investment in inclusive finance.
